The walk takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes and winds through dry Caribbean vegetation — cacti, frangipani trees, and latanier palms — with the scent of salt air drifting up from below. While most visitors head to Colombier or Gouverneur for snorkeling, those with real island knowledge will point you to a far less crowded spot: Anse de Marigot. Tucked along the eastern coast of Saint-Barthélemy, just a short drive from Grand Cul-de-Sac, this small sheltered bay is protected by an offshore reef that breaks the swell and creates a remarkably calm natural lagoon. The water is shallow — rarely more than five feet near the shore — making it an ideal spot for families with children or less experienced swimmers. From the very first strokes, the underwater spectacle unfolds: brightly colored parrotfish, schools of blue tang, yellow damselfish darting between coral formations, and occasionally even small nurse sharks resting on the sandy bottom, completely harmless and unbothered by snorkelers.
What makes Marigot particularly enjoyable is the absence of crowds and the peaceful atmosphere that pervades this stretch of coastline. There is no beach restaurant, no lounge chair rental — just the sand, the sea, and the quiet. We recommend bringing your own snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, and fins), though rentals are available at water sports shops in nearby Grand Cul-de-Sac, about five minutes away.
